When buying sandals and flip-flops for the summer, it’s important to buy take the correct precautions and ensuring proper foot health. This will ensure that you avoid chronic foot problems such as corns, callouses, and even foot and lower back pain. Here are 3 easy health tips to consider when buying sandals or fip-flops.

  1. Buy the Right Size: It’s important to have a little space at the end of the footbed to ensure your heel is not hanging off the end of the shoe, especially when wearing flip flops or sandals. Alternatively, if the shoe is too big, your foot will move around putting undue strain on your foot’s bones and joints. When buying footwear, it is important to prioritize comfort and fit.

  2.  Arch Support: Although sandals are designed to look great and feel comfortable, they aren’t typically good for your feet. Since sandals and flip flops are designed to be lighter in weight and more flexible, it is often at the expense of proper arch support. Since arch support is critical to maintaining good foot health, relief, and comfort, it is important to choose sandals or flip flops that have prominent arch support.

  3. Take care of your heel: when evaluating sandals and flip flops, it’s important to choose footwear that provides heel support. Footwear that provide a little heel or wedge will help take some of the pressure. The American Podiatric Medical Association, (APMA), recommends a heel or wedge “no more than 3/4″ for women” and “adequate cushioning to ease pressure on feet.”
