What are Calluses and how do you treat them?

A callus is a patch of skin that has thickened and hardened on the bottom on your foot. It forms because your skin is providing extra cushioning from friction and pressure to keep you safe from blisters. They are rarely painful but here are some signs of when you’ll need to seek a foot specialist:

  • Brown, black, or red discolouration

  • Cracking of the skin

  • Pain or irritation

How do you treat calluses?

While most calluses don’t need medical attention, if you have diabetes or another condition that causes poor circulation in our feet, you should contact a foot specialist. If you’d like to remove your calluses, a chiropodist can do that for you using mechanical or chemical therapies. If you have calluses that are reoccurring, try inserts or custom orthotics.

At River Podiatry, our team is ready to serve and consult you on how to treat your calluses. Set up an appointment today to speak with our team of trusted foot health professionals.
