BIG TOE ARTHRITIS SYMPTOMS
Your big toe may get osteoarthritis. It can affect joints throughout your body and when your joint cartilage wears down, your bones become exposed and rub against each other. Osteoarthritis starts slow but worsens over time, making it difficult to walk.
Arthritis causes tenderness, achiness, and joint pain. An arthritic toe may ache after prolonged periods of sitting or first thing in the morning. When there is an overgrowth of the big toe bone, it makes it difficult to bend your toe. This is a hallux rigidus.
Arthritis changes the appearance of your toe due to inflammation. Your damaged cartilage causes bones to rub against each other and your body will repair by growing more bone. These bone spurs will form a visible bump (bunions) on your toe. When you can’t bend your big toe, it makes walking difficult.
As you age, your risk of osteoarthritis goes up. Your body becomes less capable of healing damaged cartilage. Your risk of osteoarthritis goes up if it runs in the family or if you’re obese.
There are over the counter pain relievers to help with the pain and swelling. Also, wear proper footwear, which has plenty of room for your big toe. You may benefit from inserts or arch supports.
Some treatment options are custom-made insoles or stiff sole shoes. Also, your podiatrist can show you how to perform stretches and exercises. Your podiatrist may inject steroids directly into your joint.
Surgical options will depend on your activity level. Ask your podiatrist if you are a good candidate for surgery.
Here are some tips on preventing osteoarthritis. Maintain a healthy weight because it will prevent your joints from experiencing extra stress. Maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Regular exercise helps to strengthen your muscles. Try to avoid injuries while playing sports.
